A trademark after an ingredient name is not a promise about your body. It is an address. It tells you which preparation is in the capsule, and therefore which study you are entitled to read alongside it.
The short answer
• A generic ingredient name identifies a category of substance. A branded ingredient name identifies one preparation, from one supplier, made to a written specification.
• What that buys you is checkability: an identifiable source, a standardised content, and the ability to confirm that the material in the capsule is the material that was examined in research.
• What it does not buy you is an effect. Ingredient research is not product research, and a trademarked name is not an authorised health claim.
What does a branded ingredient actually mean?
Two jars can both say hyaluronic acid on the label. The word is accurate in both cases, and it is almost useless as information, because it names a family of molecules rather than a defined material. It is manufactured at very different molecular weights, by different routes, at different levels of purity.
A branded raw material is narrower by design. Hyabest® is a specific sodium hyaluronate, made by a named manufacturer to a fixed specification, batch after batch. Cartidyss® is not simply marine collagen; it is a marine type II collagen complex that also carries naturally associated glycosaminoglycans, which is a different material from a bag of hydrolysed peptides.
That is the whole of the difference, and it is more modest than most marketing implies. Branding an ingredient does not change what the molecule does inside a person. It fixes which molecule, from where, at what specification, you are being handed.
It also makes one sentence checkable. When a label says an ingredient has been studied, a branded name lets you ask which study, on which material, at which amount.
A branded name does not tell you that an ingredient works. It tells you which ingredient you are actually holding.
Why is there a trademark after the ingredient name?
The symbol is a legal device with a practical job. A supplier who has spent years developing an extract, characterising it and paying for human research has an obvious interest in preventing the name from being applied to anything else.
What sits behind each name is usually a marker compound and a stated level of it.
Keranat® is a standardised extract of golden millet seed, characterised by miliacin, a molecule found in the seed. Extramel® is a melon concentrate standardised to a defined superoxide dismutase activity, which matters because SOD is a fragile enzyme: a generic melon extract that says it contains SOD, without stating an activity, has said nothing you can verify. Hytolive® is an olive fruit polyphenol preparation quantified as hydroxytyrosol. MenaQ7® is vitamin K2 in the MK-7 form specifically, not vitamin K in general. Quatrefolic® and MecobalActive® are named forms of folate and vitamin B12 rather than the generic category names.
In each case the trademark marks the point where a vague noun becomes a documented material.
The trademark is a supplier's signature on a specification. Without one, the same word on a label can mean a great many different things.
Are more expensive supplements better?
Not automatically, and it would be convenient for us to pretend otherwise.
Price reflects the raw material, the characterisation and testing, the research behind it, the packaging and ordinary commercial margin. None of those are visible from the outside, so price alone tells you very little. An expensive product can contain generic material in a heavy jar.
There are also cases where a branded material genuinely adds nothing. Ascorbic acid is ascorbic acid. For a well-defined, simple, stable molecule, a pure generic ingredient is a perfectly good ingredient, and paying extra for a trademark on it is paying for a trademark.
Where the distinction earns its keep is in materials that are complex, fragile or naturally variable: botanical extracts, enzyme preparations that degrade, and molecules where size distribution changes how they behave.
Price is a poor proxy for quality. A named material with a stated amount is a far better one.

Research on a raw material is not research on a finished product, and a trademark is not an authorised health claim.
How do you know what is in a supplement?
By reading four things, in this order: the name of the material, the amount per daily dose, the form, and what was measured at that amount.
Ours are stated for exactly that reason. Beauty Complete™ provides Cartidyss® marine collagen complex at 500 mg per daily dose, Hyabest® sodium hyaluronate at 120 mg and Ceramosides™ phytoceramides at 30 mg. Hair Beautification™ provides Keranat® standardised millet seed extract at 300 mg per daily capsule. Peak Performance Formula™ provides Hytolive® olive fruit polyphenols delivering 15 mg of hydroxytyrosol, vitamin D3 at 25 µg and vitamin K2 as MK-7 at 90 µg.
The published work on Cartidyss® examined a daily intake of 500 mg over 90 days and measured skin-related outcomes. That research was carried out on the raw material, not on our finished product, and we have not run a clinical study on Beauty Complete™ itself.
Where an authorised EU health claim exists, we use the authorised wording and nothing beyond it. Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of skin. Vitamin K contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. For collagen in relation to skin, and for hyaluronic acid in relation to joints, no authorised claim exists, so we describe what studies measured and stop there.
An amount printed on a label is an invitation to check it. That is the reason for printing it.
Where this shows up in practice
Collagen is the clearest example, because it is where the gap between the word on the label and the material in the capsule is widest. Our need guide sets out the forms, the amounts and what the studies measured.
What to look for on the ingredients list
A short set of questions you can put to any brand, ours included.
Is the raw material named, or only the substance? A trademarked name is a specification you can look up. A category name is not.
Is the amount given per daily dose? Amounts per 100 g, or per unspecified serving, are not comparable with anything.
Is the form specified? Vitamin K2 as MK-7, collagen as type II, hyaluronic acid at a stated molecular weight. Form is often the whole difference.
Does the claim wording match the authorised wording? Authorised claims are short, dull and specific. Language that is livelier than the authorised text has usually been stretched past it.
Is research described as research on the ingredient, or implied to be research on the product? These are not the same thing, and the difference is usually visible in how carefully the sentence is written.
If the answers are mostly no, the product is not necessarily a poor one. It is one you have no way of evaluating.
A label you can argue with is worth more than a label you have to trust.

Frequently asked questions
Is a branded ingredient always better than a generic one?
No. For simple, stable nutrients the generic material is often identical in every way that matters. The distinction becomes meaningful for extracts, enzymes and molecules whose behaviour depends on form or size.
Does a trademark mean the ingredient has been approved?
No. A trademark is intellectual property, not a regulatory status. It identifies a specification and says nothing about authorisation. It is not itself a health claim.
Was the research done on the ingredient or on the product?
On the ingredient. Every study we refer to was conducted on the raw material. We have not run clinical studies on our finished formulas and we do not describe them as though we had.
Why state milligrams instead of a proprietary blend?
Because a blend total hides the individual amounts, which is exactly what is needed to compare a product with published research. A stated number can be disputed. A hidden one cannot.
Are branded ingredients just a licence to charge more?
They cost more, and sometimes that cost is not justified. What they reliably provide is traceability and consistency.
