Stand in front of a supplement shelf and pick up four collagen products. The fronts look almost identical: the word collagen, a number in grams, a marine photograph, and one sentence about skin doing a great deal of careful legal work. Turn them over. That is where they stop being identical.
Five pieces of information on the back decide whether you can judge what is in the jar. The collagen type. The tissue it came from. The size of the peptides. Whether the raw material has a name of its own. And the dose in one daily serving. Most labels print two of the five. Some print one.
The real comparison is not between the promises on the front, which are squeezed into the same few permitted words on every jar in the shop. It is between how much each manufacturer was willing to write on the back.
The short version
• Five things on the back of a jar decide whether you can judge what is in it: the collagen type, the source tissue, the peptide size, the raw material's own name, and the dose in one daily serving. Most labels print two of the five.

Which collagen is best?
The best collagen is the one whose label lets you check it, because standing in a shop you cannot analyse the powder — you can only audit the disclosure.
A jar that says marine collagen 10 g gives you a number and a category. A jar that says hydrolysed fish skin collagen, type I, peptides under 3000 Da, 10 g per daily dose tells you exactly what the manufacturer will be held to. One of them is checkable. The other asks you to take its word for it.
What should a collagen supplement label tell you?
A collagen label should state the type, the source tissue, the peptide size, the specific raw material and the dose per daily serving. Only the last of those has to be there.
Directive 2002/46/EC on food supplements requires the amount of each active substance to be declared in figures, for the portion recommended for daily consumption. Nothing obliges anyone to name the collagen type, the tissue, the enzyme or the molecular weight. Regulation 1169/2011 puts the ingredient list in descending order of weight, so you can at least see what dominates a formula, and fish is a declarable allergen — which is why marine products always say fish somewhere. Fish is a species group, not a tissue, and the difference between skin, scale and cartilage is invisible inside that word.
Everything beyond that minimum is a choice the manufacturer made. The same reading applies to the forms of magnesium.
What is hydrolysed collagen, and why is the peptide size almost never printed?
Hydrolysed collagen is collagen cut by enzymes into short peptide chains, and the resulting size distribution is a production specification.
Peptide size is quoted in daltons, and commercial hydrolysates typically sit between roughly 2000 and 5000 Da. Manufacturers pick enzymes and process time to hit a target, so the number is real and controlled. A stated molecular weight tells you that someone holds a specification and is prepared to publish it.
What does a named raw material actually buy you?
A named raw material buys two concrete things: a fixed production process, and usually a published trial on that exact material at a stated dose.
Marine collagen on an ingredient list is a category, not a substance. Two products with identical wording can differ in species, tissue, enzyme, how far the hydrolysis was taken, and ash and mineral content. A named material with a specification fixes all of those, which is what makes a study on it transferable to the jar in your hand. Evidence only attaches to something you can define.

How much collagen per day?
Trials of generic hydrolysed collagen for skin have mostly used 2.5 to 10 grams a day for 8 to 24 weeks.
A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology covered 11 studies and 805 participants: eight used hydrolysate at 2.5 g to 10 g per day for 8 to 24 weeks, two a tripeptide at 3 g per day. A 2021 meta analysis in the International Journal of Dermatology pooled 19 randomised double blind trials in 1125 participants, overwhelmingly women, most running about 90 days.
The dose belongs to the material. A concentrated cartilage fraction studied at half a gram and a bulk skin hydrolysate studied at ten grams are not on the same scale, and a figure in grams tells you nothing until you know what it refers to. Ten grams of an unnamed powder is a bigger number, not a better one.
When should you take collagen?
Take it at a time you will remember, every day, for at least twelve weeks.
The absorption curve is known. In a 2022 study in npj Science of Food, volunteers took 5 g of collagen hydrolysate and the main peptides peaked in blood between roughly 0.6 and 1.4 hours, one unusually stable tripeptide at 2.6 hours. Peptides arrive quickly and clear over hours, whenever you take them.
What the trials tested was a fixed daily dose taken consistently for two to six months. The practical version is unglamorous: attach the dose to something you already do daily, because the thing that decides the outcome is not the hour, it is week three.
Which collagen should you choose, a checklist for the shop
Score the label on what it is willing to specify.
- 1. Turn the pack over before reading the front. The front is the same few permitted words on every jar in the shop.
- 2. Find the collagen type. If it is not stated, the product is almost certainly type I from skin or hide.
- 3. Find the tissue. Fish skin, fish scale, fish cartilage and bovine hide are different raw materials, and the word fish is an allergen declaration, not a source.
- 4. Look for a raw material with a name of its own. If there is one, you can look up the study behind it.
- 5. Read the dose per daily serving, not per 100 grams, and check how many scoops that is.
- 6. Ask whether that dose matches a published study on the same material.
- 7. Discount any sentence on the front that sounds like a promise about your skin. Every product is allowed to print it, so it tells you nothing.
